I have had the extreme good fortune to be raised on a vineyard in the Napa Valley, Vine Hill Ranch. It was instilled in me at an early age that quality ingredients, appropriately sited and grown with care by dedicated individuals, result in excellent products.
My first introduction to the idea of non-harmful cosmetics came in the early 90s as the public relations consultant for Bare Escentuals mineral makeup. The concept of toxic ingredients in our cosmetics was eye opening, but it wasn’t until a decade later that my search for effective organic skincare came to fruition.
In 2007, while on vacation in Morocco, I was introduced to Argan Oil and personally experienced its benefits on my own skin. Intrigued by the story of its unique production methods while recognizing a need in the marketplace for simple organic skincare, I decided to create the skincare line I wanted to use with this ingredient at its core. In 2008, I set out to create Kahina Giving Beauty, a simple, effective, ethical, safe, and beautifully packaged line of skin and body care products, inspired by Morocco and made in the US.
Since then, I have made multiple trips to Morocco to personally source the finest argan oil, which is at the heart of our products. I have had the good fortune to get to know the Berber women of Morocco who do the hard work of extracting the oil for Kahina and to see firsthand how their work, as well as our practice of giving back to these women and their communities, has made a positive difference in their lives.
I have done my best to honor the Berber women of Morocco by bringing them to life for our customers, in the hopes that you might understand and share in the spirit behind Giving Beauty. I invite you to learn more of their stories here.
The Berber women have kindly opened their homes and hearts to me to share a glimpse of their lives, although it hasn’t always been easy to capture in photographs because of their modesty. In the spirit of women connecting through shared beauty rituals, I invite you to discover the story of Kahina and to share your own stories via Instagram using the hashtag #kahinagivingbeauty.
Our love for exploring traditional skincare remedies began in Morocco, where women have understood the power of natural ingredients: argan and prickly pear seed oils to restore and moisturize, rhassoul clay to purify, green tea to tone and refine, blue tansy, aloe vera, and rose to calm skin, and antiseptic rosemary.
Kahina Giving Beauty combines these with other high quality natural ingredients carefully sourced from small family farms and women’s cooperatives around the world to create innovative formulations. The end result: a truly effective and ethical line of luxury skin and body care products.
