In Celebration of Morocco’s Roses

Each May, in the town of Kelaat M’Gouna in Morocco’s Valley of Roses, the rose petal harvest is celebrated with the Festival of Roses. Kelaat M’Gouna is the country’s largest producer of rose water and rose oil. Its Damask roses, originally brought to Kelaat M’Gouna by the French in 1938, are prized around the world for their fragrance. It takes approximately 3 tons of rose petals to obtain 1 liter of rose water through steam distillation. The petals are carefully separated from the rose buds, which are dried and sold. As the scent of roses wafts through the streets, the harvest is celebrated over three days of traditional Berber food, music, dancing and a parade culminating in the selection of the Rose Queen.
